The Seven Commandments as a Foundation

The Seven Commandments are written in large letters on the barn wall, representing the unalterable law of Animalism. They embody the principles of equality, no tyranny, no human vices. The animals learn them by heart. The commandments are the moral grounding of the new society.
The First Modification: Milk and Apples

The pigs reserve milk and apples for themselves, arguing that they are brainworkers. The commandment about equality is not yet changed, but the principle is violated. Squealer's sophistry convinces the animals that this is necessary. The first crack in the moral order appears.
The Second Modification: Beds

The pigs move into the farmhouse and sleep in beds. The Fourth Commandment is altered to "No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets." The animals are confused but accept the explanation. The text is changed, but the spirit is betrayed. The commandments begin to lose their permanence.
The Third Modification: Killing

After the executions, the animals remember the Sixth Commandment "No animal shall kill any other animal." Muriel reads it as "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause." The modification justifies the killings. The animals are relieved that the law was not broken, but the law has been bent to fit the regime.
The Fourth Modification: Alcohol

After the Whisky Incident, the pigs drink heavily. The Fifth Commandment is altered to "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess." The pigs now have permission to drink, as long as they do not overdo it. The principle of prohibition is abandoned.
The Final Commandment

The Seven Commandments are reduced to a single phrase: "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others." This is the ultimate perversion of Old Major's teaching. The original spirit of equality is completely inverted. The commandment now legitimizes the pigs' supremacy.
